I’ve never seen McCain’s campaign logo before, let alone study it. To me, when I was looking at the shrunken version of the icon on my iPhone, I thought, “it doesn’t look bad.” But once I’ve zoomed in, my old impressions of Optima came back: it just didn’t look right. Actually that’s a lie. I think the font looks alright, but it’s really hard to find a context in which it will not look out of place. I suppose it’s because the font is trying to be classical-looking while having a modern sheen to it, which in my opinion does not work. Or maybe it’s because of the small letter c that completely threw the proportions off, because I thought it seemed to work fine in the running mate test.
