A lot of the times, case mods aren’t that appealing to me either because it’s overdone with too many LEDs and unnecessary/gaudy embellishments, or it’s too complicated. I still appreciate the effort put into it, but I just don’t fancy the end result, don’t think it’s an improvement over cases you can buy off the shelf, don’t see the point etc.

But then there are ones like this. Simple, looks good — apart from the extra bits at the side — well thought out, tailored exactly to that person’s desires, and built manually from scratch. I look at that and — perhaps foolishly — think, “I can do that. That should be within my capabilities. Give me free reign in the L2 workshops and I can totally make my own.”

That itch was just fading. Now all I can think about is how I’d design and make my own case.

So that was…weird. I just watched all of my Numbers documents on the iPad being swallowed by iCloud right before my eyes. Went to iCloud.com to check, and they were gone from there as well.

My first plan was to turn off document syncing on the iPhone to preserve the copies there, hoping that I can then plug it into my Mac and retrieve the files through iTunes. But even though I had Numbers disconnected from iCloud, and it had explicitly asked me if I wanted to keep the ones that were already on my iPhone, the app still deleted my documents (exactly like this).

I then went into my Library folder on my Mac to see what backups may be there. Initially I thought I could maybe extract some files from the backup iTunes made when I was updating the devices to iOS 5 back in October. But then I came across ~/Library/Mobile Documents, and oddly and thankfully, the files were still there. So after some quick web searches and extension changes, those files are now back on iCloud and my iPad.

I’m now hesitant as to whether I should let Numbers continue to sync with iCloud. On one hand, iCloud does sync an extra copy to my Mac, which has proven to be useful this time. But on the other, I think that Mobile Documents folder was supposed to reflect changes on iCloud ASAP. So if this sort of thing happens again, it’s possible that there won’t be copies on my Mac by the time I check. Hmm…

Was curious how McLaren managed to do a smooth nose while everybody else so far have humpy ones, so I took the official press pics for MP4‑27 and F2012 and adjusted them to the same scale based on tyre size. Obviously I can’t accurately trace the bits that are blocked from view — the lip underneath the nose on the McLaren and the step and winglets/prongs on the Ferrari — so I just took a rough guess using photos taken from other angles.
